iliyana Natsir has shown the world what solid militancy can bring to a competition, as she and her partner Tontowi Ahmad won the mixed doubles trophy at the Indonesia Open on Sunday, beating their Chinese opponents, world number one pair Zheng Siwei and Cheng Qingchen, 22-20, 21-15.
“We are relieved to finally put an end to our title drought. I feel content now having won an Indonesia Open trophy,” Liliyana, widely known as Butet, said after the match.
Liliyana hung tough throughout the competition, fighting on with a thigh injury. The pair also came out on top at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Liliyana and Tontowi were awarded US$79,000 as the first-prize winner.
The world number three in men’s doubles, Chinese Li Jun Hui and Liu Yuchen, beat Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen 21-19, 19-21, 21-18 in the final round.
The Boe/Mogensen pair gave their best throughout the games and always tried to catch up with their Chinese opponents. The Danes secured the second game but then lost the third with a twopoint gap.
Meanwhile, another Chinese pair Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan won the women’s doubles final after beating South Korean pair Chang Ye-na and Lee So-hee 2119, 15-21, 21-10.
India’s Kidambi Srikanth won the men’s singles final after beating Japan’s Kazumasa Sakai 2111, 21-19. Japan’s Sayaka Sato won the women’s singles final, beating world number five Sung Ji-hyun 21-13, 17-21, 21-14. This makes Sato the first Japanese women shuttler to win the Indonesia Open title.
