orruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutors have demanded senior tax officer, Handang Soekarno, be sentenced to 15 years behind bars for allegedly accepting bribes from a businessman who asked for his favor to evade paying taxes.

“Court evidence has convinced us that the defendant accepted bribes in this tax evasion case,” prosecutor Ali Fikri told the Jakarta Corruption Court on Wednesday.

The prosecutors also demanded that Handang be fined Rp 750 million (roughly US$58,000).

Handang has been charged with accepting bribes from businessman Ramapanicker Rajamohanan Nair, a former director of Jakarta-based export firm PT EK Prima Ekspor Indonesia. He was said to have promised Handang Rp 6 billion in a purported attempt to dodge his company’s tax obligations amounting to Rp 78 billion.

KPK caught Handang accepting $148,500 cash from Nair on Nov. 21. The court found Nain guilty and sentenced him to three years in prison in April.

The bribery case has attracted public attention as it has implicated a relative of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, businessman Arif Budi Sulistyo. Arif testified as a witness in Nair’s trial in April, where he acknowledged he was a business partner of Nain, but he denied being involved in the bribery. (kuk/ary)
