wo foreign inmates who escaped from Kerobokan Penitentiary in Bali were arrested in Dili, Timor Leste, on Thursday, four days after they and two other foreign prisoners escaped from the overcrowded prison through a tunnel.
Bali Police spokesperson Adj. Sr. Comr. Hengky Widjaja confirmed the arrests. “The two inmates have been apprehended. They are Sayed Muhammad Said, an Indian citizen, and Bulgarian citizen Dimitar Nikolov Iliev,” he told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.
Police are still searching for two other inmates, Australian Shaun Edward Davidson and Malaysia Tee Kok King Bin Tee Kim Sai. Badung Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Yudith S. Hananta said the police were coordinating with Timor Leste authorities to transport them back to Bali.
The four inmates escaped from the prison on Monday after reportedly digging a small hole to enter an unused water sewage tunnel that connected to outside the prison.
Kerobokan prison warden Tonny Nainggolan said an internal investigation was under way to determine whether any inmates or guards were involved in helping them escape.
Those proven guilty of helping them escape could be charged under Article 126 of the Criminal Code, which carries a maximum four years’ imprisonment. The arrested escapees will be placed in insolation cells. “Some of their rights can be revoked, such as visitation rights, right to remission, parole, etc,” he stressed.
