A

survey in the Southeast Asia and Oceania region shows that applications developed in Indonesia account for only 12 percent of the 100 most popular applications used by mobile phone users.

The figure is below that of other Southeast Asia countries -- Singapore (23 percent), Vietnam (21 percent) Thailand (18 percent) and Malaysia (13 percent) -- according to a survey that is part of an annual report by Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson.

Ericsson Indonesia and Timor Leste vice president and network product unit head Ronni Nurmal said Thursday that Indonesian apps developers needed to increase their share in the application markets, particularly in the Indonesian market.

“We have our own language and diverse cultures and this is very interesting for mobile subscribers in Indonesia if we expose this area,” he said, adding that phone subscriptions increased by 10 million in Indonesia in the first quarter of 2017.

The survey also shows that apps such as dictionaries, banking services, media, travel and shopping apps dominate local apps mostly used by Indonesian users.“Ericsson along with governments and telecommunication operators are trying to increase the number of local apps so people can use apps generated by Indonesians,” Ronni said.
