resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has instructed his ministers to seriously address the problems related to the emergence of ride-hailing applications, particularly the opposition by users and operators of conventional taxis and other public transportation.
He stressed the operation of online taxis was inevitable because of technology developments and the current lack of public transportation infrastructure.
"During this transition period, the government must respond swiftly to the dynamic changes in order to ensure that everyone can accept it," Jokowi said prior to a closed-door meeting at the State Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Earlier this month, the Transportation Ministry announced floor and ceiling fares for car-hailing services as part of the effort to create fair competition for conventional taxis and to protect the interests of users.
The new fares were set at between Rp 3,500 (26 US cents) and Rp 6,000 rupiah per kilometer in Java, Bali and Sumatra and between Rp 3,700 and Rp 6,500 in Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara, Maluku and Papua. (bbn)
