tate-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura (AP) II has been appointed to operate Kertajati International Airport in Majalengka, West Java.

AP II president director Muhammad Awaluddin said on Sunday his company and PT Bandara Internasional Jawa Barat, the airport developer, would sign a memorandum of understanding and framework commitment on the operation and further development of the airport.

The airport is set to open in the first half of 2018.

“It is possible that we will establish a joint venture for the development of business in the airport,” said Awaluddin, adding that his company was also involved in the development of the nearby Aero City.

He expressed optimism that the airport would help economic growth in the province and support the growing tourist industry in the provincial capital of Bandung and its surrounding areas.

“We express gratitude to the West Java administration for its trust in AP II to operate the airport,” Awaluddin said, adding that his company and PT BIJB would discuss details of the airport's operation.

In the initial phase, Kertajati Airport has been designed to accommodate 5 million passengers annually and have one runway measuring 3,000 by 60 meters. It will eventually have a capacity of 18 million passengers per year and two runways.

West Java already has Husein Sastranegara International Airport in Bandung, also operated by PT AP. (bbn)
