P

olice are expected to intensify patrols along the Casablanca elevated road in South Jakarta to prevent motorcycle riders from passing along the route, which is exclusively meant for cars.

“At least [the patrol] from morning to 10 p.m.,” Jakarta Transportation Agency head Andri Yansyah told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

“If they [bikers] continue violating road traffic regulations, just take away their [driving] licenses so they learn from it” Andri said.

On Tuesday morning hundreds of motorcycle drivers protested the police for banning them from the overpass and blocked it, causing terrible traffic congestion around Casablanca.

The Casablanca overpass, which connects Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta and Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, is prohibited for use by motorcycle riders for safety reasons.

“The wind is strong up there, so it will be dangerous for motorcycles,” Andri said. (hol)
