Water, mud inundate West Jakarta graves for 24 years

he Jakarta Forest Agency plans to remove 3,800 graves from Kapuk Teko cemetery in West Jakarta, due to water and mud inundation since 1993.
Agency head Djafar Muchlisin said the 1.3-hectare cemetery was currently being drained. “We will remove the graves to Tegal Alur [also in West Jakarta] afterwards,” he said as quoted by tempo.co, adding that the draining process would be finished in the next three to four weeks.
To remove the 3,800 graves, the city administration requires about Rp 2 billion (US$150,000) in funds.
Djafar further explained that the Kapuk Teko area would then be transformed into a green open space after the removal.
Meanwhile, Djafar also said Jakarta Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat wanted to construct a reservoir at the site of the former cemetery, requiring the administration to acquire 97 plots of land in Kapuk Teko. (vny)
