The Jakarta administration has allocated some Rp 9 billion (US$675,000) to finance an anticipated increase in city councilors’ salaries, as the administration and the City Council are currently deliberating a draft bylaw on the matter.
City Secretary Saefullah said the administration had finalized the draft for the revised 2017 budget (APBD-P) and would soon submit it to the City Council for deliberation. The additional salary would be disbursed in the last three or four months of 2017.
“We need around Rp 9 billion for the salary increase in 2017,” Saefullah told journalists at City Hall. He added that the revised 2017 budget amounted to Rp 71.7 trillion, marking an increase of Rp 1.6 trillion over the initial 2017 budget (APBD).
Councilors aim to pass the bylaw on their pay rise in August. The bylaw is based on a government regulation signed by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in June, which stipulates that all regional councilors are entitled to a raise in performance allowances.
With the proposed bylaw, the City Council leaders and members can receive a raise of around 20 percent of their current salaries. Currently, City Council leaders receive around Rp 95 million per month, while members receive around Rp 75 million per month.
