National scene: Former governor Basofi dies at 77

Basofi Sudirman (JP/Jerry Adiguna)

Former Jakarta deputy governor and East Java governor Basofi Sudirman passed away at the Medistra hospital in Jakarta on Monday at 11 a.m. He was 77.

Basofi, who was known as a singing governor for his efforts to popularize the dangdut song “Tidak Semua Laki-Laki” (Not All Men), was admitted to the hospital last Saturday.

His family has yet to issue a statement on the cause of the former Army general’s death.

In the early 1990s, Basofi made “Tidak Semua Laki-Laki,” composed by Leo Waldy, one of the favorite songs on TV when he was serving as Jakarta deputy governor.

The popularity he gained for singing the song paved the way for him to win the election as East Java governor, a post he held from 1993 to 1998.

As the East Java leader, Basofi initiated the Return to the Village movement. The down-to-earth image he evoked made him a popular governor, who was loved not only by residents of the province but also by those in other regions.

Before serving as Jakarta deputy governor between 1987 and 1992, Basofi spent years in the military, including when he served as the chief of the Bukit Barisan military command in West Sumatra between 1986 and 1987. The last rank he achieved in the military was that of mayor general.
