To mark the 50th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the 40th anniversary of the dialogue partnership between ASEAN and Canada, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland, representing Canadian International Development, and Le Francophonie Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau, announced during the Canada-ASEAN post ministerial conference in Manila that Canada will provide a new scholarship program for ASEAN students.
The initiative will provide C$10 million (Rp 105 billion) over a period of five years to help postgraduate students and mid-level professionals from Southeast Asia access world-class education in Canada.
Canada has committed itself to combating poverty while promoting human rights in Southeast Asia, with a particular focus on the rights of women and girls as well as the rights of migrant workers. Canada is cooperating with ASEAN to deliver the benefits of economic development to the poorest and most marginalized members of society.
The scholarship and student exchange initiative will provide individuals from ASEAN member countries, especially women, an opportunity to submit a study application or conduct short-term research studies in Canada. Scholarships will be given to fields, which contribute most to ASEAN’s efforts to narrow the development gap and mitigate poverty, such as climate-friendly agricultural practices, sustainable energy, public finance management as well as reproductive and sexual health rights for women and girls.
