A

n odd-even license plate policy will be applied to the Cikampek toll road that connects Jakarta with Bekasi, West Java starting next week, owing to heavy congestion along the toll road.

The policy, which has been applied to Jakarta's main roads, stipulates that only vehicles with license plates ending in odd digits are allowed to use the roads on odd dates and vice versa.

"The policy will be applied from the West Bekasi toll road to the Semanggi toll road," said Bambang Prihartono, head of the Greater Jakarta Transportation Body (BPTJ), said as quoted by kompas.com on Wednesday.

He further said the plan aimed at pushing commuters to switch from private vehicles to public transportation.

The policy implementation follows the Jakarta administration's move to apply the rule during morning and afternoon rush hour.

Previously, Transportation Minister Budi Karya said the plan was initiated after receiving suggestions from commuters.  (agn)
