ekanbaru Transportation Agency in Riau has banned the operation of app-based taxis around the city, erecting banners across the city in its bid to crack down on the ride-hailing services.
Twenty banners have been hung in several locations in the city, including Transmetro bus shelters.
Pekanbaru Transportation Agency head Sunarko defended the ban on the grounds that online taxi services were no different from illegal travel agencies.
“Their operation contravenes a 2017 ministerial regulation on the operation of outside-route transportation,” he said on Friday.
Sunarko added that the regulation would be enforced on every transportation company and the agency would arrest and detain perpetrators found to be breaking the law.
“Just like the illegal travel agents, there will be raids on online taxi services. If they are apprehended, they will be brought before the law,” he said.
Sunarko added that his agency would possibly permit the operation of online taxis if there were new regulations to govern them.
