Jakarta Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat said on Monday that the annual Flora and Fauna expo would be the last time held at Banteng Square in Central Jakarta.
akarta Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat has announced that the recent Flora and Fauna Expo was the last one to be held at Banteng Square in Central Jakarta.
“I have met with the tourism agency head. Next year’s Flora and Fauna [Flona] Expo will be held at Setu Babakan in South Jakarta,” he said on Monday. The city administration would soon revitalize the Banteng Square, and afterwards the site would no longer be used for the annual expo.
Djarot said the Setu Babakan Betawi cultural was spacious and suitable for hosting festivals, adding that it could also promote the Betawi culture side by side with the Flona Expo.
“So, the Banteng park will stay neat,” he said during the expo’s closing ceremony, as quoted by kompas.com.
He added that Banteng Square was going to be managed like the nearby National Monument area and would highlight the West Irian Liberation statue.
The statue was built in the era of governor Henk Ngantung (1964-1965).
“We brought this up, as Indonesia was incomplete until Irian returned to the motherland,” Djarot said, referring to the diplomatic conflict between Indonesia and the Netherlands over the sovereignty of West Irian (now Papua) between 1950 and 1962.
Flona Expo 2017 at Banteng Square was held for 32 days beginning on July 21. During the closing event, awards were given to the best-selling and most innovative tenants. (dra)
