resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo invited 40 Muslim clerics from Central Java to the State Palace on Wednesday to disseminate his newly issued character-building education program.
“God willing, this is a big task, both for clerics and for the government,” Jokowi told the clerics, as quoted by Antara.
Signed last week, Presidential Regulation No. 87/2017 stipulates a number of goals, such as preparing students to become “Indonesia’s golden generation” by the year the country celebrates 100 years of independence in 2045.
Jokowi signed the regulation to replace Culture and Education Ministry Regulation No. 23/2017 on school days amid strong pressure from madrassa (traditional Islamic schools), which feared a five-day school week would kill their operation.
Character-building education, according to the presidential regulation, will be taught at all educational levels through in-class, extracurricular and cocurricular activities. “It is hoped this presidential regulation can serve as a foundation for our society, for our santri [Islamic school students], for our students to protect themselves against cultural interference from the outside,” Jokowi told the clerics.
