A

n East Jakarta resident was slapped with Rp 25 million (US$1,887) fine on Friday after cutting down two trees in front of his shop on Jl. Lubang Buaya in Cipayung.

The Central Jakarta District court ruled that Romadhon Andi Widodo had violated Regional Regulation No 8/2007 on public order by clearing the trees, which were located on a green lane.

The Jakarta Forestry Agency’s community development and law enforcement division head Henri Perez said that the violation had been reported by residents of the area.

“We conducted an investigation and interviewed witnesses,” he said.

Romadhon claimed he had been unaware of a regulation prohibiting the felling of trees on green lanes, but admitted to the violation and was willing to pay the fine.

“He cut the 7-meter mahogany trees because they blocked the access to his shop,” Henri said. (syl)
