akarta Police traffic division chief Sr. Comr. Halim Pagarra hopes that Jakarta governor-elect Anies Baswedan and his deputy Sandiaga Uno help the police in hiring traffic attendants.
Under his instruction, the Jakarta Police have trained hundreds of such attendants, locally known as Pak Ogah, in a bid to reduce Jakarta’s traffic congestion problems.
However, Jakarta Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat rejected Halim’s proposal on funding for the attendants, arguing that the allocation of funds for the service was not set in the 2017 city budget.
"If the governor said that this year there was no allocation, hopefully the new administration in 2018 can help,” Halim said as quoted by kompas.com on Wednesday.
As part of a training program that began last month, the police have taught traffic attendants basic movements and signs in managing traffic.
However, the police have yet to deploy them as previously promised due to a lack of funding.
Halim said that although the police have continued to seek funding, no parties have responded.
Currently, the trained attendants help the police on a volunteer basis, he said. (agn)
