resident Donald Trump promised new sanctions on North Korea ahead of a meeting Thursday with leaders of Japan and South Korea to discuss the growing crisis over Pyongyang’s weapons program.
“We will be putting more sanctions on North Korea,” Trump told reporters in New York, where he is attending the United Nations General Assembly.
National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster told CNN Thursday morning Trump is taking the steps to try to resolve the problem “short of war.”
McMaster added that the announcement will come as he meets with the Japanese and South Korean leaders, key US allies in the region.
The strategy session on curbing North Korea’s nuclear program is expected to including prodding South Korea toward a harder-line approach favored by the US and Japan.
Trump, who is to meet individually with South Korean President Moon Jae-In before a joint meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Trump has made an aggressive stance against Kim Jong Un’s regime the centerpiece of his four days at the United Nations General Assembly this week.
