T

he Bekasi administration in West Java has created a dedicated channel on its official website bekasikota.go.id to enable its citizens to report any suspicious online activities, a senior official has said.

The move follows the Jakarta Police's investigation into nikahsirri.com, which has been accused of being a prostitution site under the guise of a matchmaking website, Bekasi deputy mayor Ahmad Syaikhu said.

"We expect the city's Communication and Information Agency to intensively collect reports from citizens [about alleged cybercrime] through the dedicated channel," he said on Monday as quoted by Antara news agency, adding that the reports received would then be forwarded to the Communications and Information Ministry.

He said that the matchmaking site, which offered virgin brides for auction, had degraded human dignity and caused anxiety among residents. He expected to detect and prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The police have arrested Aris Wahyudi, 49, founder of nikahsirri.com, and charged him under the Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE) Law and the Pornography Law.

Aris developed the site in his rented house in Jatimekar, Jatiasih district, which is under the jurisdiction of the Bekasi city administration. (fac)
