T

he Jakarta Police have revealed that 5,300 people registered to become members of nikahsirri.com, a website offering matchmaking and secret wedding services that was shut down by the government on Sunday.

The number is much higher than a previous estimate of 2,700 members.

“After our IT experts traced all of the [membership] data, we found 5,300 registered clients on the website,” Jakarta Police special crimes unit director Sr. Comr. Adi Derian said on Tuesday as quoted by tribunnews.com.

The website has been accused of acting as a prostitution site under the guise of matchmaking.

Meanwhile, the police are still tracking down the number of registered partners who applied to become brides, grooms, wedding officials and witnesses.

Previously, the police said there were 300 registered partners on the website.

Together with the website’s owner, Aris Wahyudi, the police will trace the partners’ data, Adi said.

Aris was arrested at his house in Bekasi, West Java, on Sunday.

He was charged under the Pornography Law and the Electronic Information and Transactions Law. (cal)
