he central government says it will officially lift the ban on the construction of islet G -- one of 17 islets planned for Jakarta Bay.

“It is only [waiting] for the meeting,” said Maritime Affairs Coordinating Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan in Jakarta, tempo.co reported on Thursday.

Luhut’s predecessor, Rizal Ramli stopped islet G’s construction on July 1, 2016 after he held a meeting with officials of the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry, Environment and Forestry Ministry, Transportation Ministry and the Jakarta administration.

Rizal said the joint team established by the institution concluded that the islet G construction had committed gross violations because it was built on top of underwater electrical wires and among shipping lanes.

Previously, the team had imposed a moratorium on the reclamation project, pending a review.

Luhut said that the meeting on Friday would only discuss the fate of islet G because the other reclamation problems in Jakarta Bay have been settled.

“It is only about islet G, one point only,” said Luhut, adding that all areas had been identified and there was no construction plan for the other islets that violated regulations.

Reclamation had become a public debate prior to the Jakarta gubernatorial election early this year when then gubernatorial candidate, Anies Baswedan, rejected the project.

Anies, who will be inaugurated as Jakarta’s governor on Oct. 16, has not commented on the issue. (bbn)
