ekasi Mayor Rahmat Effendi has condemned on Wednesday two factories near the Bekasi River in Bantargebang, West Java, after impromptu inspections discovered that the factories had dumped their waste into the river.
The two factories are iron and steel maker PT Pratama Prima Bajatama and beverage packaging company PT Prima Kemasindo, according to a wartakota.tribunnews.com report.
"The factories must stop their business activities until they have fulfilled their obligations, one of which is to build a waste treatment installation [IPAL],” Rahmat said.
Rahmat added that although Prima Bajatama had a license for liquid waste disposal, the factory was not using its waste treatment plant, and the waste it had dumped into the river had an acid content well above the standard.
"Meanwhile, PT Prima Kemasindo has proved that it cannot manage its coal waste," he said, referring to the coal the company used to power its production process.
Rahmat added that Kemasindo also did not own a license for managing hazardous and toxic waste. Furthermore, the factory's location violated river zoning regulations.
Rahmat called on the factories' management to respond immediately to their closure by installing an IPAL and submitting all required documents. (rdi)
