ovel Baswedan, a top investigator at the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), will reportedly return home from Singapore soon. He is recovering from severe eyes injuries after an acid attack in April.

KPK commissioner Saut Situmorang said it was expected Novel would be back in Indonesia next month as the anti-graft body was striving to speed up its investigation into an internal rift that reportedly involved Novel.

“We are hopeful that he [Novel] will recover soon,” Saut said on Monday. “There are several cases we need to look into, including the one that involves Aris.”

Saut was referring to the KPK’s investigation into director Brig. Gen. Aris Budiman who accused Novel of defamation after the latter called Aris a person with no integrity in an e-mail.

Aris revealed the internal rift before a hearing with a special team assigned to probe the KPK in the House of Representatives. He has also filed a report against Novel with the National Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim). The KPK has conducted an internal review to examine the claims.

Meanwhile, Novel’s supporters have called on the police to find and arrest the people responsible for the acid attack.

The chairman of Muhammadiyah’s youth wing, Danhil Anzar Simanjuntak, questioned the police’s lack of progress in the case.

“There is almost no progress in the police’s investigation into Novel’s case although civil society groups as well as the media have publicly spoken about it,” Danhil said.

“Who attacked Novel remains a mystery. Everything is kept in the dark,” he added. (msa/ebf)
