Jakarta governor-elect Anies Baswedan pledged on Tuesday to eliminate slum areas without eliminating kampung.
“What we need to clear out are the slums. We have to get rid of them but not eliminate the villages themselves,” Anies said during a meeting at the City Council building in Central Jakarta, adding that as urban villages were a part of Indonesian tradition, they needed to be preserved and developed.
He said that since the city's urban villages were always described as slum areas, he hoped to create a new image for them.
“I hope in Jakarta, we can feel a happy living atmosphere in a modern setting. Modern does not always mean removing tradition, but it can revive tradition in the new era,” Anies said as quoted by kompas.com.
Anies, alongside his deputy-elect Sandiaga Uno, is set to be inaugurated on Oct.16 as the new Jakarta governor for the 2017 to 2022 term. (wnd)
