embers of the Mimika Search and Rescue (SAR) team, along with the quick-response unit of mining giant Freeport Indonesia, have recovered the body of Ahmad Hadi from the Carstensz Pyramid, the highest summit of Mount Jayawijaya in Papua.

The 34-year-old climber allegedly died from hypoxemia when climbing the peak on Sunday

"The body arrived at Moses Kilangin Airport [in Timika, Mimika regency, Papua] after the joint team airlifted it using a Bell 122 helicopter belonging to Freeport," Papua Police spokesman Sr. Comr. AM Kamal said on Tuesday.

The body will be sent to Kebon Jeruk in West Jakarta for burial.

Ahmad started climbing the Carstensz Pyramid with two friends, Aris and Norwegian Beathe Johannessen, last Thursday. Ahmad developed signs of hypoxemia at 9 p.m. on Sunday when they were climbing the peak.

"His friends reported the matter to Asian One Air, a flight operator," Kamal said.

The police have warned hikers to check their health before climbing the peak to avoid health problems such as hypothermia. (foy/bbs)
