ndonesian Soccer Association (PSSI) deputy chief Joko Driyono said its medical division has started an investigation into the death of Persela Lamongan FC goalkeeper Choirul Huda, who died after an on-field collision with teammate Ramon Rodriguez and Semen Padang FC striker Marcel Sacramento on Sunday.
Joko said the PSSI had been assigned to connect all the dots, including reviewing Choirul’s health records and to contact the local hospital’s medical team, the police and witnesses to gather more information about the cause of death. He added that the team would complete its duties within a week.
“We are going to consult with FIFA when we get the team’s findings. We need to know what FIFA will recommend to help us prevent similar situations from happening in the future,” he said on Monday.
He added that if FIFA recommended the association improve its medical assistance during matches then they would comply.
The current regulation mandates that a match organizer must provide medical assistance and quick access to the nearest hospital.
Meanwhile, Persela coach Yunan Achmadi said the club’s management had decided to retire Choirul’s jersey. The decision was made to commemorate the legendary goalkeeper who had spent 18 years at the club.
“Choirul will forever be remembered as one of Lamongan’s best sons who dedicated his life to the club. We are honoring his dedication and loyalty,” he said.
Before being rushed to the Dr. Soegiri Regional Hospital, Choirul grasped his head and neck after the fatal collision. Doctors said he stopped breathing and suffered a heart attack.
“Choirul Huda died after a collision with a teammate that caused him to stop breathing and suffer cardiac arrest,” said Yudistiro Andri Nugroho, the head of the emergency care unit at the hospital, as quoted by AFP.
Yudistiro said Choirul suffered possible neck and head trauma from the impact to his chest and lower jaw after he dived at the feet of on-rushing players and was caught by Rodriguez’s legs.
Persela paid tribute to Choirul, who played more than 500 times for the club since 1999, calling him “The Real Legend” of the club in a posting on Twitter.
Thousands of fans also took to social media to honor Choirul, who had been known to Persela supporters as “One Man, One Club, One Love.”
