South Tangerang’s Health Agency is currently familiarizing people with a bylaw on non-smoking areas in the city.
The bylaw, called Bylaw No. 4/2016, provides a legal umbrella to protect residents’ right to breathe clean and smoke-free air, said the Agency’s head, Iin Sofiyawati.
"The bylaw on non-smoking areas restricts places in which people can smoke. This can protect non-smokers from passive smoke,” Iin told Wartakotanews.com on Wednesday.
With the bylaw, people can no longer smoke in public places such as schools, hospitals, parks, offices, shopping malls and restaurants.
The dissemination is currently reaching government offices, health centers and hospitals, she further claimed.
"In November, we will intensify dissemination to high schools with the BNN,” she said in reference to the National Narcotics Agency (BNN).
Under the bylaw, those found smoking in public areas will be charged with a maximum of six months in prison or a maximum fine of Rp 50 million (US$ 3,699).
Nonetheless, she added, the restriction has yet to be applied given that dissemination of the bylaw is still ongoing. (agn)
