suspect in a child sex abuse case, Suhaimi Rinaldi, 40, was found dead inside his cell at Depok Penitentiary in West Java on Tuesday afternoon.
His body was found hanging from a clothesline by an officer who had come to pick him up for his trial, said Depok Penitentiary warden Sohibur Rachman.
Suhaimi had been detained at the penitentiary for a month as he was accused of molesting a child. According to his cellmate, Susanto, 23, Suhaimi had tried to commit suicide several times. On one occasion, Suhaimi drank soapy water, he said.
Sukmajaya Police chief Comr. I Gusti Ngurah Bronet Ranapati said investigators were treating the cause of death as suicide.
“No traces of violence were found on the victim’s body. He is likely to have hanged himself while his cellmate was not aware,” Bronet said as quoted by kompas.com.
Police are still questioning Susanto as they continue their investigation.
Suhaimi’s body has been taken to the National Police Hospital in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta, to undergo an autopsy.
