s many as 360 houses in Sitiarjo village, Malang, East Java, were inundated by floodwater from the overflowing Penguluran River following intense rain that had drenched the area over the past few days.
The floods also caused power outages and cut off the access road connecting the area to other villages in the southern area of Malang, affecting at least 10,000 residents.
Local authorities, with cooperation from the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), had started relocating residents trapped in their houses and had also provided medical care to the residents for the next few days, Malang Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) head Bambang Istiawan said.
Sitiarjo village chief Minarto said the floods started at 7 a.m. on Wednesday and had inundated the roads, farmland and residential areas. He said the village was prone to floods every year during the rainy season from the overflow of the river that passed through the village.
