he opposition took center stage at the House of Representatives during a hearing that will eventually determine the fate of a controversial regulation in a lieu of law on mass organizations (Perppu Ormas).
Constitutional law experts urged lawmakers on Wednesday to reject the Perppu on the grounds that it might lead the country to authoritarianism all over again.
The experts included Refly Harun, Irman Putra Sidin and Yusril Ihza Mahendra, a seasoned lawyer representing Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI), the first organization disbanded for promoting an Islamic caliphate in a judicial review case against the Perppu.
Issued by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in July, the Perppu gives the government the power to disband mass organizations deemed to promote values that contravene the Pancasila without judicial proceedings.
