est-Java province-owned enterprise, PT Bandara Internasional Jawa Barat (BIJB), will team up with national flag carrier PT Garuda Indonesia in a series of airport management activities.

Under a memorandum of understanding signed by both parties on Thursday in Jakarta, BIJB, which is building Kertajati Airport, will join hands with Garuda in the development of domestic and international routes, catering, ground handling and cargo warehousing at the airport, among other activities.

The latter owns several subsidiaries, such as Aerowisata, Sabre Travel Network Indonesia and Garuda Maintenance Facility Aero Asia, that are considered capable of performing the activities.

“We believe cooperation will accelerate the realization of our vision, namely to become an international holding company and the best airport operator in Indonesia,” BIJB president director Virda Dimas Ekaputra said in the statement.

Located at a 1,800 hectare area in Majalengka Regency, West Java, Kertajati Airport has completed 65 percent of its development so far.

The airport, that required Rp 2.6 trillion in investment, is set to commence operation in the first half of next year and will initially serve 2.7 million passengers a year, including those embarking on haj pilgrimage.

Garuda president director Pahala Mansury expected the collaboration to allow Kertajati Airport to become the country’s next hub in addition to airports in Jakarta, Bali, Surabaya, Medan and Makassar.
