As many as 12 Indonesian junior shuttlers have made it to the quarterfinals of the Blibli.com Yonex Sunrise BWF World Junior Championships 2017 in Yogyakarta.

However, none of them came from the men’s singles sector.

“Our target was to reach the semifinals, but we were outplayed by shuttlers from India, Japan, Thailand and Taiwan. They have better players with more experience [in tournaments],” said men’s singles coach Harry Hartono.

“Indonesian juniors are being left behind. We need to improve their physical training and sending them to more tournaments,” he added.

Rinov Rivaldi and Pitha Haningtyas Mentari, the 11th seeded pair in the mixed doubles at the tournament, stunned top seeds Kim Won-ho and Lee Yu-rim of South Korea to reach the quarterfinals.

The Indonesians defeated the South Koreans 21-17, 21-17 in 36 minutes in the second round at the GOR Amongrogo sports hall on Thursday.

“We’d like to be able to keep our playing style — focused, just like we did today [Thursday] — for the quarterfinals.

“We have to fight from the beginning of the match and not get clumsy or too overconfident throughout the battle,” Rinov said.

In the quarterfinal, Rinov and Pitha will face non-seeded pair Thailand’s Natthapat Trinkajee and Kwanchanok Sudjaipraparat, who upset 13th seeds Yee Jun Chang and Pearly Koong Le Tan of Malaysia in the second round.

Meanwhile, fourth seeds Jauza Fadhila Sugiarto and Ribka Sugiarto will meet eighth seeds Li Zi Qing and Teng Chun Hsun of Taiwan in the women’s doubles quarterfinal.

Jauza and Ribka outclassed Thailand’s Thanapim Kaweenuntavong and Suphapich Silprakob 21-9, 21-16 in the second round; while, Li and Teng defeated Vimala Heriau and Léonice Huet of France 21-11, 21-11.

Indonesia will certainly send a women’s singles shuttler into the semifinals of the world tournament as Gregoria Mariska Tunjung is set to clash against compatriot Aurum Oktavia Winata on Friday.

Third seed Gregoria ousted non-seeded Zhiyi Yang of China 21-18, 19-21, 21-12, while Aurum beat Thi Anh Thu Vu of Vietnam 21-13, 21-9.

“One of them [Gregoria and Aurum] has berthed a semifinal spot, so I’m just hoping for the best.

“Gregoria was a bit unwell [on Thursday’s match]. I hope for a speedy recovery so she can be at her best [on Friday],” said the women’s singles coach Jeffer Rosobin.

The remaining three spots will be filled by Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti as well as Yeremia Erich Yoche Yacob and Angelica Wiratama in the mixed doubles and Rinov and Yeremia in the men’s doubles.

On Friday, third seeds Rehan and Siti play ninth seeds Eng Cheong Ng and Ee Wei Toh of Malaysia, Yeremia and Angelica come up against Shiwen Liu and Li Wenmei of China, while Rinov and Yeremia face either Malaysians Yee Jian Kwek and Wei Chong Man or Taiwanese pair Chuang Pu Sheng and Lin Yu Chieh.
