he National Police has launched an Android-based mobile application called Help Bencana Alam to give early warning of an eruption at Mount Agung.
With the app, users will be notified with siren sounds once an eruption is imminent, National Police chief’s operation assistant Insp. Mochamad Iriawan said after the introduction of the app to Bali Police officials in Denpasar on Thursday.
“The control of the application will be taken over by the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center [PVMBG] as they have the authority to decide when the sirens should be turned on,” he added.
Bali Police chief Insp. Gen. Petrus R. Golose said he welcomed the app. “However, since the app is only for android-based systems, not all people living near the mountain can use it,” he said.
Devy Kamil Syahbana, a senior official at Indonesia’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation said on Thursday that Mount Agung is still prone to eruption. “But no one knows when the eruption will happen,” he stressed.
