espite the reemergence of illegal street vendors along streets and sidewalks near Tanah Abang Market in Central Jakarta, the city administration said it had yet to formulate on a plan on how to handle the chaotic situation.
Jakarta Pubic Order Agency (Satpol PP) deputy head Hidayatullah said at City Hall on Thursday morning that his agency would look into the matter further after listing the street vendors on Thursday afternoon.
“The governor [Anies Baswedan] has ordered me to list the street vendors, and then, together with the governor, we will discuss organizing the vendors,” Hidayatullah said.
The attempt to organize street vendors on congested streets near the largest textile center in Southeast Asia was initiated by former Jakarta governor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and was continued by his successor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama.
In September 2013, then governor Jokowi relocated more than 700 street vendors occupying streets and sidewalks in Tanah Abang to the nearby Block G building.
Despite the move, street vendors eventually returned, forcing the administration to take firm actions toward the vendors by seizing their goods.
