emocratic Party politician Andi Mappangara has resigned from his position as speaker of the West Sulawesi Provincial Council after being named a corruption suspect by the South and West Sulawesi Prosecutor’s Office.
Andi announced his resignation after the Makassar District Court in South Sulawesi rejected Wednesday a pretrial motion challenging the suspect status of him and three other suspects in the case, namely deputy speakers Harun of the National Mandate Party (PAN) and Munandar Wijaya of the Gerindra Party.
The other suspect, Deputy Speaker Hamzah Hapati Hasan of the Golkar Party, did not file a motion.
All four speakers were named suspects in a graft case centering on constituency funds amounting to Rp 360 billion (US$26.5 million) in the 2016 provincial budget.

Andi said he also resigned from his position as secretary of the Democratic Party's West Sulawesi chapter.
“I want to focus on my legal case. I also want to prevent this case from further disrupting the council's performance,” he told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.
The chairman of the chapter, Suhardi Duka, said Andi’s resignation was approved.
“We will hold a meeting to discuss it and decide on who will replace him as chapter secretary and council speaker,” Suhardi said. (bbs)
