ith new challenges faced by the world today, it is expected that leaders of state universities can improve their capacity to manage their education institutions so they can compete in international fora, a minister has said.
“Rectors or directors of state universities must understand academic-related matters, human and financial resources, student affairs, research and employee prosperity,” Research, Technology and Higher Education Minister Mohamad Nasir said when he opened a leadership workshop on Thursday.
He further said leaders of state universities must manage to determine priorities in managing their institutions. “Don’t open too many faculties if it is possible,” said the minister in a statement made available to The Jakarta Post on Thursday.
Nasir said the use of communications and information technology could become one way to boost their efficiency.
He hoped the workshop could change the mindset of state university leaders in tackling the challenges of managing universities along with the new context of Indonesia’s higher education development.
Citing the instruction of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, Nasir encouraged the opening of study programs that were up-to-date and in line with the needs of the work world. Currently, he said, the work world needed a lot more graduates from certain study programs, such as logistics, mechatronics and retail marketing.
The Research, Technology and Higher Education Ministry is encouraging universities to open modern study programs that are in line with the development of the new era. After completing their studies, graduates of the study programs will hopefully be able to meet the needs of the working world, opening up job opportunities. (hol/ebf)
