n contrast to the previous administration’s proposal to expand the motorcycle ban on the city’s main thoroughfares, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan plans to revoke the ban on motorcycles crossing Jl. MH Thamrin that had been in place since 2014.
After a leadership meeting on Monday, which discussed sidewalk development on Jl. MH Thamrin in Central Jakarta, the newly elected governor said a revision in the prevailing regulation was needed to allow motorcyclists to travel through the area.
A gubernatorial decree issued by former governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama in December 2014 regulated that motorcycles were not allowed to use some main streets in the capital, including Jl. MH Thamrin to minimize traffic accidents.
“Apparently it’s based on a gubernatorial decree, thus there should be a change on the decree,” Anies told kompas.com.
Earlier this year, the administration under Djarot Saiful Hidayat proposed to expand the ban to other thoroughfares in the capital in an attempt to ease traffic congestion that had been exacerbated by development projects.
The plan, however, was dismissed after protest from motorcyclists. (fac)
