P

resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has called on House of Representatives Speaker and graft suspect Setya Novanto to follow legal procedures being handled by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) regarding his case.

“I demand Pak Setya follow the legal process,” Jokowi told journalists after he attended an event held by the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) at the House compound in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Friday.

“I am sure law enforcement in our country has done well,” said the President.

Setya, who is also the Golkar Party chairman, is undergoing medical treatment at Medika Permata Hijau Hospital in South Jakarta after he was injured in a car accident last night.

Setya was reportedly on his way to attend an interview with MetroTV when the accident occurred. The car was traveling at a high rate of speed, Setya's lawyer Fredrich Yunadi said.

The KPK has issued an arrest warrant for Setya as he has repeatedly dodged summonses for questioning. The antigraft body has also asked the National Police and Interpol to put Setya on their most-wanted persons list.

Setya has cited various reasons for avoiding KPK's questioning, including claiming immunity as a lawmaker, for which the KPK first had to secure the President's approval to be able to summon him.

On Wednesday evening, KPK investigators searched Setya's home in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, to arrest him, but they were met by only his wife and lawyer. (ebf)
