Nine cadets from the Semarang Police Academy were sentenced to six months in jail on Friday after the Semarang District Court found they were complicit in violence that led to the death of another cadet in May. The court, however, found that the suspects were not directly involved in the violence that resulted in the death of second-year cadet M. Adam.
“According to witness testimony, the defendants did not participate in the violence, but encouraged it” presiding judge Casmaya said, adding that the nine third-year cadets had apologized for their actions.
The nine cadets, however, will be released soon since they have been detained since May 21. The sentence was lighter than the one year and six months’ imprisonment sought by prosecutors.
Five other cadets are standing trial in the case.
The incident has also prompted National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian to appoint North Sumatra Police chief Insp. Gen. Rycko Amelza Dahniel as the new principal of the academy in June, replacing Insp. Gen. Arnas Yusuf, who was removed from the post over reported negligence in handling the case.
