A woman suspected of killing her 5-year-old son last week does not have any psychological problems, the police have said.
Novi Wanti, 26, allegedly killed the child in a room located on the second floor of her boarding house in Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta. She was reportedly upset that her son kept wetting his pants and cried all the time.
The single mother went as far as tying his hands and feet together with a piece of plastic rope and spraying insect repellent in his face to stop him crying.
She reportedly took her son to the hospital using an online ride-hailing service, but doctors pronounced the boy dead upon arrival.
"The suspect has no mental illness. She is not insane," West Jakarta Police criminal investigation head Sr. Adj. Comr. Edy Sitepu said during a case reconstruction on Monday.
Many people flocked to the site to see the reconstruction while condemning Novi for her alleged act, tribunnews.com reported.
The police have so far questioned 18 witnesses in the case, Edy added.
Novi has been charged under the Child Protection Law, which could lead to 15 years’ imprisonment upon conviction. (fac)
