he State Logistics Agency (Bulog) on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Association of Indonesian Retailers (Aprindo) and the Indonesian Market Operators Association (Asparindo) on food distribution.
The MoU focuses on the distribution of four main food commodities controlled by the government -- meat, rice, sugar and cooking oil --, said Bulog president director Djarot Kusumayakti after the signing ceremony at his office.
He said both traditional and modern retailers would cooperate with Bulog regional offices for access to the food stocks.
"The purpose of this MoU is to maintain price stability, especially to face major holidays like Christmas, New Year and Idul Fitri, the times when demand usually surges," he said, adding that the MoU was valid for one year.
He added the MoU would be followed up with more detailed agreements.
Aprindo chairman Roy Nicholas Mandey said before the MoU, modern retailers in East Java had worked with Bulog’s regional branches to supply basic food commodities, and after the MoU, the cooperation would be extended to other regions.
"Our members in eastern Indonesia, especially in North Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi and Central Sulawesi, have been waiting for this MoU, because they tend to be short on basic food stocks, particularly during the rainy season,” he added. (bbn)
