request to hold a Christmas celebration at the National Monument (Monas) compound in Central Jakarta has been received by the Jakarta administration, Governor Anies Baswedan has said.
The Monas Park soon became a spot for religious activities with Islamic groups holding events there on Nov. 30, Dec. 1 and Dec. 2, soon after Anies changed a regulation to allow such events.
"Just recently there was a meeting in regard to the Christmas celebration at Monas. I have yet to check the result of [the meeting] or its date," the governor told reporters at the City Hall on Monday.
He did not elaborate on who the party or organization that requested to hold the event was.
Anies said that even before there was a request to hold the celebratory event, he had thought of holding one. He said he would be cooperating with the organizers to set the date for the celebration.
"I proposed the event be held near Christmas. However, because of public holidays and other considerations, organizers requested it to be held in January next year," Anies said as quoted by kompas.com.
Anies previously revised a gubernatorial regulation, which stipulated that Monas should be a neutral venue and banned people from holding religious and cultural ceremonies in the park. (fac)
