A long-planned fish auction museum in Penjaringan, North Jakarta, is set to be opened on Dec. 28, an official said on Friday

Head of the Jakarta Maritime, Fisheries and Food Security Agency (DKPKP), Darjamuni, said the development of the museum, constructed on the site of the former Pasar Ikan (fish market), was 87 percent complete.

Darjamuni said the historic fish auction building was built around 1863.

Because of its historic value, the city administration planned to revive the site and turn it into a tourist attraction, he added.

"We will integrate the museum with the existing maritime museum and the hexagonal market, which is set to be renovated," Darjamuni said, referring to the market that would be developed by city-owned market operator PD Pasar Jaya.

Jakarta Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno said the development of the museum had been conducted in accordance with the recommendation of the city's cultural heritage team.

He said he wished the area, which is located near Sunda Kelapa port, would become a new tourism icon.

Sandiaga went on to promise that he would accommodate local residents who wanted to sell souvenirs at the future tourist spot.

Previously, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said he would form shelters for residents who had been evicted from the Pasar Ikan area, but had returned to build semi-permanent dwellings there.

Residents were evicted from the area by the administration of former Jakarta governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama in April 2016.

After Anies was elected as Ahok's successor in April, dozens of residents returned to erect semi-permanent dwellings on the cleared land.
