The German Embassy, in cooperation with the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry and the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS), organized on Dec.5 a seminar at Le Meridien hotel in Jakarta on managing marine plastic pollution and policy initiatives in ASEAN countries.
The embassy’s charge d’ affaires, Hendirik Barkeling, delivered opening remarks while the coordinating maritime affairs minister’s deputy, Arif Havas Oegroseno, gave a keynote speech at the seminar , which was attended by scholars, senior government officials, diplomats and activists from not only Indonesia but also from other ASEAN countries.
The purpose of this regional forum was to address data needs and gaps on trends and impacts of marine litter in Southeast Asia. The seminar also focused on the lessons learned from ASEAN countries’ initiatives in curbing marine plastic pollution.
Indonesia is the second-largest contributor to marine plastic pollution after China. Plastic debris is devastating to the marine ecosystem. Almost 90 percent of all trash floating on the surface of oceans is plastic.
Indonesia is serious about handling marine plastic debris. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s administration has set an ambitious target of reducing plastic debris by 70 percent by 2025.
