Broken water pumps in the Dukuh Atas area of Central Jakarta have been fixed following massive flooding on Monday.
At least three of six pumps at the Dukuh Atas pumping station were reportedly not operating properly when Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan visited the station during the floods. Pump operator Mulyadi told the governor on Monday that he had reported the broken pumps on Oct. 22 but had received no response from the city administration.
“The pumps have been fixed since last night. All six pumps now function normally,” said Ari Sarifudin, one of the pump operators, on Tuesday, as quoted by kompas.com.
Ari added that the pumps with a capacity of more than 200 liters per second each had broken when heavy rain hit Jakarta.
“Only three pumps were operating during [Monday’s floods]. High-intensity rain and garbage stuck in the blades had [disrupted] the pumps’ electricity [supply],” Ari said.
The pumps that were still operating during the flooding at the Dukuh Atas underpass only have a small capacity – two of 100 liters per second and one of 250 liters per second, according to Ari.
The underpass inundated by floods that reached nearly 1 meter on Monday, forcing motorists to find alternative ways and causing heavy congestion. (wnd)
