he National Police are beefing up measures to anticipate terrorist threats and traffic congestion ahead of Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations.
While police have detected "no terrorist threat so far," according to National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian, who was quoted by kompas.com, they remain on alert following security threats ahead of Christmas Eve last year.
"We are working to ensure that we do not miss anything," Tito said on Tuesday.
Just days before Christmas last year, the police's counterterrorism squad, Densus 88, thwarted a suicide bomb plot in Banten. In the operation, the team shot dead three people suspected to have been preparing a suicide bomb attack in Jakarta.
Christmas celebrations passed peacefully in 2015, but only two weeks into 2016, suicide bombers and gunmen killed four people in an attack in Jakarta's crowded Thamrin area.
Ahead of this year's festivities, more than 141,000 security personnel, including some 85,000 police officers and around 15,000 Indonesian Military (TNI) personnel, will be deployed to secure venues where crowds are expected to gather in large numbers across the country.
The measures were aimed at maintaining security while at the same time preventing traffic congestion, said Adj. Comr. Subono from the Traffic Police, as reported by tempo.co.
Some of the personnel is set to be deployed to the Jakarta-Tangerang-Merak toll road, the Jakarta-Cikampek toll road, the exit of the Pejagan toll road, the exit of East Brebes toll road and the Jagorawi toll road. (ami/ipa)
