he Indonesian Hockey Federation (FHI) is running a 10-day test event for the 2018 Asian Games at the new ABC fields in Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex in Senayan, Jakarta.
The event, titled 2017 National Hockey Tournament, started on Dec. 9 and will end on Dec. 19. As many as 750 athletes from 11 provinces partake in the competition.
FHI secretary-general Yasser Arafat said the event would be used to scout national athletes for the 2018 Games.
“We’re seeking 36 potential athletes respectively in men’s and women’s teams within the tournament. Later, 18 players from each team will go the national training camp for the Asian Games,” said Yasser recently, adding that coach Lim Chio Cuan of Malaysia would select the players.
The tournament sees 11 men’s teams coming from West Java, East Java, Yogyakarta, East Kalimantan, Jakarta, North Sumatra, Central Java, South Sulawesi, Banten, Papua and West Papua. Meanwhile, nine women’s teams come from the aforementioned provinces, with the exception of Papua and West Papua.
Indonesian hockey teams are targeting to win medals in the 2018 Games.
“The strong hockey teams in Asia are China, India, Pakistan and Malaysia,” said Yasser.
