he 2018 Asian Games Organizing Committee (INASGOC) predicted that it would spend more than initially planned for next year’s multi-sporting event, which will be co-hosted by Jakarta and Palembang, South Sumatra.
“The extra [expenditure] may come from the hospitality sector because hotels around Gelora Bung Karno [sporting complex in Jakarta] will likely raise their room rates. However, we’ve already prepared an exit [strategy] for such a case,” INASGOC secretary-general Eris Herryanto said on Monday as quoted by Antara.
Eris also saw possible extra costs in welcoming additional guests from participating countries and members of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).
Registration for guests is set to open on Jan. 7, 2018, and end in March.
“We’ve created a budget that would cater to about 10,000 athletes from participating countries. But if 12,000 show up, we would surely need extra money,” Eris said.
The organizers were given the greenlight to use Rp 2 trillion (US$140 million) from the state budget, and another Rp 1 trillion from sponsors. Initially, the Games were predicted to cost around Rp 8 trillion, but the figure was later cut to Rp 5.6 trillion due to financial restrictions.
