Economy in brief: Pertamina stocks up for the holidays

State-owned energy firm Pertamina is confident that its gas supplies are sufficient to cover demand during the year-end holiday season.

Pertamina marketing director Muchamad Iskandar said that the projected gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) demand for the festive season was based on last year’s realized figures.

“Our prediction will match last year’s figures with a minor increase from the concurrent year,” said Iskandar in Jakarta.

He added that the firm expected gasoline usage to rise by 3 percent from normal figures, while gasoil consumption was predicted to decline by 2 percent.

Pertamina predicts gasoline usage in the period to increase for most of its products. Premium is expected to rise by 2 percent, Pertalite by 12 percent and LPG by 4 percent. However Solar diesel usage is predicted to decrease by 6 percent.

Pertamina senior vice president for fuel marketing and distribution Gigih Wahyu Hari Irianto said the firm had already increased its stocks since the start of the month.

Moreover, Pertamina has created a taskforce to anticipate the expected rise in gasoline and LPG demand during the Christmas and New Year celebration period.

He also said that Pertamina would implement measures used during Idul Fitri this year, including mobile dispenser units, pre-packaged fuel and a delivery system for areas with no nearby gas stations.

Iskandar said that special attention would also be given to areas where the majority of the population celebrated Christmas. These areas include North Sumatra, North Sulawesi, Maluku, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) and Papua.
