Island focus: Rinjani trekking routes closed in January

T

rekking routes at Mount Rinjani in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), will be closed from Jan.1 to March 31, 2018, owing to bad weather. Trekking activities will be reopened on April 1.

During the closure, the Mount Rinjani National Park (TNGR) management agency will prepare an online-based registration system that can be used once the mountain-climbing activity reopens on April 1.

“Apart from bad weather, the trekking activity closure is needed for ecosystem recovery purposes at the national park,” TNGR management agency Raden Agus Budi Santosa said on Friday.

The policy was taken following weather forecast issued by the NTB Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), which has predicted medium to high intensity rainfall of between 101 and 400 millimeters in Central, East and North Lombok, from January to March.
